Meeting Marina Gamba

Marina Gamba (1570-1612) was the sentimental partner of Galileo Galilei and the mother of the three illegitimate children he had with the famous astronomer. She was born in Venice, but spent most of her life living in Padua. Because of his many scientific activities, Galileo Galilei traveled to many places. On one of these trips, he met Marina and soon after took her to live with him in Padua. It is known that she was a poor woman and found in Galilei a breadwinner. However, Galileo Galilei spouse never existed, since the astronomer never wanted to marry her.

The patriarchy of that time

The love affair between Marina Gamba and Galileo Galilei testifies to the worst of the patriarchal society of that time. As a humble and unfortunate woman, Gamboa accepted the negative conditions that Galilei imposed on her. He never married her nor did he recognize her as his sentimental partner in front of others. At that time de facto love unions were frowned upon by society, something that does not happen today. Galileo was a socially important man and surely Gamba did not dare to argue with him.

Three illegitimate children

During the love affair between Galileo Galilei and Marina Gamba, three illegitimate children were born: Virginia, Livia and Vincenzo. Due to Galilei’s social position, in addition to his numerous friendships with the Italian nobility, he could not publicly acknowledge an illegitimate family. The astronomer decided the destiny of his children: Virginia and Livia were admitted to a convent and after a few years they became nuns. They lived in the convent all their lives. At that time the best destiny for illegitimate daughters was to become nuns, since they were not fit for marriage.

As for Vincenzo, he was the only one who received his father’s surname, since the astronomer decided to legitimize him.

Science over love life

There was no Galileo Galilei spouse in the life of the Italian physicist despite a de facto love affair with Marina Gamba. Evidently Galilei preferred science before formally marrying his partner. The physicist focused on his scientific work and everything else was secondary to him.

It should also be remembered that the astronomer had a terrible relationship with the Catholic Church. The Roman Inquisition considered him a suspect of heresy and condemned him to house arrest until his death. For all these reasons, Galilei would never marry through the Catholic Church.

Sexism

Galileo Galilei had three illegitimate children and decided the fate of each of them according to their gender. He imposed on his daughters, Virginia and Livia, a religious life by having them enter a convent. That was considered dignified and they eventually became nuns. With his son Vincenzo, however, everything was different. Since he was a man, Galileo did want to recognize him before the law and gave him his surname. The astronomer also managed to get his son a noble title: Grand Duke of Tuscany. Galilei’s behavior reflects the sexism of the time, something that is slowly being eradicated in the West.

Conclusion

Marina Gamba was Galileo Galilei’s faithful companion throughout the years, allowing the physicist to achieve all his scientific goals. However, there was no Galileo Galilei wife in the destiny of the Italian genius for several reasons. He was at odds with the Catholic Church and would never have married. On the other hand, Galilei was totally dedicated to scientific activity and downplayed the importance of everything else. Reflecting the times, Gamba accepted the conditions that his partner imposed on him and never defended her own interests nor those of their children.

Albert Einstein’s Wives

Albert Einstein had not one, but two wives.

The first was a college classmate named Mileva Maric. They had a daughter together before they divorced in 1902. The second wife was Elsa Lowenthal, who he married in 1919 and divorced in 1936.

Mileva Maric

Mileva’s contributions to Einstein’s work are extremely important because she helped him with his math homework and corrected his calculations. Although her contributions were vital, they were not accepted by the academic community. She was female and from a lower social class than Einstein (he came from a wealthy family). This led to their eventual separation and divorced after many years of marriage.

They had a son together, but then he left her

When they married in 1919, Albert Einstein was already an established physicist. His wife (a physicist) had to take care of their son and his father’s intellectual accomplishments. Einstein was a very busy man and had little time to raise their son, Eduard. He left it up to his wife to provide childcare and ultimately divorced her in 1936.

Einstein and Mileva only had one child together – a son named Eduard. After his parents divorced, Eduard legally changed his last name from Einstein to Curie as he wanted nothing more to do with Albert Einstein after what he did to Mileva.

Many people know about Mileva as Einstein’s first wife but don’t know she was also a physicist who contributed to the invention of the world’s first nuclear reactor alongside him.

Mileva is often overlooked because she is not given credit for her contributions or her role in history.

Einstein divorced Maric when she became pregnant with another man’s child.

Maric and Einstein divorced in 1919 because she had an affair with her first cousin.

Maric was a cultured woman who loved to read and paint. She was a professor of mathematics and physics at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zurich, Switzerland.

Maric met Albert Einstein at a family party when she was 20 years old. According to the marriage agreement, if they were to have children, their surname would be Einstein’s. Maric and Einstein were married for six years before they separated.

Then he married his cousin, Elsa Lowenthal

When Einstein and Elsa first met, they were both teenagers and were immediately attracted to each other. Elsa was an intellectual, and she and Einstein bonded over their mutual love of science. They got engaged in 1903, but the engagement did not last long.

Elsa’s father objected to her marrying a Jew and decided to end the relationship by sending her to Switzerland. However, her father eventually changed his mind, returning home after four months abroad. The couple married in 1919 when Einstein divorced his first wife, Mileva Maric.

He and Elsa had no children together.

Einstein’s wife, Elsa, was a woman of many talents. She was an educator and an advocate for women in science. She also helped to raise Einstein’s youngest son. Though she never had children of her own, Elsa played an important role in the lives of others.

Though she never had children with Einstein, her marriage to him allowed her to be there for his children. When he died in 1955, she became guardian for his youngest son, Eduard, who was just 11 years old at the time.’

Einstein once said that he would have liked to have had two children with Elsa – one who would be a boy and one who would be a girl. This is not what happened; they had no children together. But by playing this role as mother for his youngest son, Elsa could leave behind something meaningful for the world.

During his lifetime, Sir Isaac Newton made substantial contributions to science. He invented calculus, giving us a better grasp of optics than anyone else. Newton’s most important work was on gravitational theory when it comes to physics.

Poor farmer’s son turned famous physicist and mathematician. Fortunately for humanity, Newton was sent to Cambridge to become a preacher since he was a lousy farmer. Newton majored in mathematics at Cambridge, where Euclid, Baconian, and Cartesian thought heavily influenced him. As a result of the disease, Newton was compelled to leave Cambridge, producing many of his most important discoveries.

Isaac Newton Wife

Newton gained a household name in 1689 when he was elected to the House of Commons to represent the University of Cambridge. Royal Society president: He was elected in 1703, a position that he still holds. In 1705, Queen Anne bestowed the honor of a knighthood on him. He never had a wife or a family.

Newton died at the age of 84 in 1727. After his death, his body was relocated to a more prominent location in Westminster Abbey. Significant levels of mercury were found in the scientist’s system during the exhumation, most likely due to his alchemical activity.

Personal Relations

While in London for the funeral of Sir Isaac Newton, Voltaire wrote that he “was never sensible to any passion, was not subject to the normal frailties of mankind, nor had any commerce with women—a fact which was confirmed me by… the physician and surgeon who attended him in his final moments.” In the wake of this widely held idea that he passed away as a virgin, Charles Hutton, John Maynard Keynes, and Carl Sagan have all spoken on the subject.

Newton had a close friendship with Nicolas Fatio de Duillier, a Swiss mathematician he met in London in 1689.

Both of these events occurred simultaneously: Newton’s friendship with his friends Samuel Pepys and John Locke came to an abrupt end in 1693, and he had a psychological breakdown. Locke “endeavors to embroil me with ladies,” he wrote in a letter to the latter.

In a letter to Robert Hooke in February 1676, It was because he was standing on the shoulders of giants, according to Newton, that he could see further. In addition to being a statement of humility, two scholars claim that Newton’s remark was written during a debate with Hooke regarding optical findings as an oblique attack on Hooke (who was reported to be short and hunchbacked). The well-known proverb about standing on the shoulders of giants, popularized by 17th-century poet George Herbert (a former orator of the University of Cambridge and fellow of Trinity College) in his Jacula Prudentum (1651), had as its central point that “a dwarf on a giant’s shoulders sees farther of the two.” In this way, Newton would be the “dwarf” in the analogy, not Hooke.

Newton wrote in a later memoir that the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before him. In his mind, he seemed to have been “just like a youngster playing on the sea-shore and distracting myself in locating a smoother pebble or a nicer shell than average,” he claimed.

Physics Nobel Prize winner Steven Weinberg described Newton in 2015 as “a vicious antagonist” who would make an awful foe. He notably highlighted Newton’s attitude toward Robert Hooke and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.

In light of these and other characteristics, including his extraordinary ability to focus, it has been speculated that Newton may have had Asperger’s syndrome, a kind of high-functioning autism.

The Conclusion

Sir Isaac Newton had no Wife. Sir Isaac Newton’s father was Isaac Newton Sr., and his mother was Hannah Ayscough. Contrary to popular belief, however, Sir Isaac Newton was never married.

Perhaps the loss of his father before he was even born, or the mother’s remarriage to another guy she didn’t like throughout his youth had anything to do with it. A person’s outlook on adult relationships can be skewed by their childhood experiences. Isaac Newton was in love with science and his work as a scientist, and it’s true. He stayed up late every night working in his laboratory.

The scientific revolution would not have happened without Isaac Newton, who went on to become one of the most influential scientists of all time.

Indeed, he embodies the conventional bachelor of science. Undoubtedly, historians are very confident that he died a virgin. Chastity and science are not mutually exclusive, but they were for old Isaac.

Apart from being an atheist, he was almost certainly homosexual and was undoubtedly more motivated by the mind and intellect than worldly pursuits such as love, fortune, or celebrity.
